If your child writes essays in English, there’s a good chance these four words appear in almost every one: good, bad, show, important. They’re not wrong — but they may be holding your child back.
자녀가 영어로 에세이를 쓴다면, 이 네 단어가 거의 매번 등장할 거예요: good, bad, show, important. 틀린 단어는 아니에요 — 하지만 이 단어들이 아이의 점수를 발목 잡고 있을 수도 있습니다.
Why These Words Are a Problem
Academic writing is graded differently than everyday writing. Teachers at the middle and high school level are looking for vocabulary that shows a student can express ideas with precision — and overusing simple words signals that a student hasn’t developed that skill yet. The good news? This is one of the easiest things to fix.
아카데믹 라이팅은 일상적인 글쓰기와 다른 기준으로 채점돼요. 중·고등학교 선생님들은 학생이 정확하게 표현할 수 있는 어휘를 갖췄는지를 보거든요 — 단순한 단어를 반복해서 쓰면, 그 능력이 아직 부족하다는 신호로 읽혀요. 좋은 소식은요? 이건 고치기 가장 쉬운 부분 중 하나예요.
I put together a Word Upgrade Poster that I actually use with my own students. It gives them better alternatives for four of the most overused words in academic essays — along with fill-in-the-blank example sentences so they can practice using the new words right away.

Here’s what’s inside:
- GOOD → beneficial, effective, valuable, significant…
- BAD → detrimental, harmful, adverse, counterproductive…
- SHOW → demonstrates, illustrates, indicates, reveals…
- IMPORTANT → crucial, essential, fundamental, vital…
Print it out and hang it above your child’s desk. Every time they write an essay, have them check — did they use any of the four words? If so, swap it out.
