The Problem Most Parents Don’t Know They Have
Your child brings home an essay. It looks fine. The sentences are complete, there’s an introduction and a conclusion, and the teacher didn’t write anything alarming in the margins. So you assume things are on track.
아이가 에세이를 가져왔어요. 겉보기엔 괜찮아 보여요. 문장도 완성되어 있고, 서론과 결론도 있고, 선생님 코멘트도 별다른 게 없어요. 그래서 그냥 잘 되고 있는 줄 알고 넘어갑니다.
But “fine” in 5th grade covers an enormous range. There’s the student who writes a 2-out-of-4 essay — organized, readable, but completely lacking real evidence or analysis. And then there’s the student in the same class writing at a 4-out-of-4 level — the one whose essays cite specific data, use domain-specific vocabulary, and actually argue something instead of just describing it. Both essays might look “fine” to a parent at a glance. The difference between them is the difference between a C and an A.
그런데 5학년의 “괜찮다”는 말 안에는 정말 넓은 스펙트럼이 있어요. 4점 만점에 2점짜리 에세이를 쓰는 학생도 있고, 같은 반에서 4점짜리를 쓰는 학생도 있어요. 둘 다 문장은 완성되어 있고, 구성도 있고, 겉으로 보면 비슷해 보일 수 있어요. 하지만 4점짜리 에세이는 구체적인 근거를 제시하고, 전문 어휘를 사용하고, 단순히 설명하는 게 아니라 실제로 주장을 합니다. 그 차이가 C와 A의 차이입니다.
Most parents don’t know this gap exists — not because they’re not paying attention, but because they’ve never been shown what each level actually looks like.
대부분의 부모님이 이 격차를 모르는 건 관심이 없어서가 아니에요. 각 수준이 실제로 어떻게 생겼는지 눈으로 본 적이 없어서입니다.
What This Guide Actually Is
I created this guide because I kept seeing the same thing in my own students: parents who cared deeply about their child’s education but had no frame of reference for what “strong writing” looked like at this level. In Korea, academic benchmarks are clearly communicated. In the U.S. system, parents are often left to guess.
이 가이드를 만든 이유는 제 학생들의 부모님들을 보면서 반복적으로 같은 패턴을 발견했기 때문입니다 — 아이 교육에 깊이 관심을 갖고 계시지만, “잘 쓴 글”이 어떤 모습인지 기준이 없는 분들이 너무 많았어요. 한국에서는 학업 기준이 명확하게 전달되는 편이지만, 미국 교육 시스템에서는 부모님이 혼자 감으로 짐작해야 하는 경우가 많습니다.
This is a collection of 20 writing sample essays for 5th graders in their second semester, written by me based on the New York State ELA Writing Rubric — the official framework used across grades 4–5 to evaluate student writing. The rubric scores writing on four categories: Content & Analysis, Command of Evidence, Coherence & Organization, and Control of Conventions.
이 자료는 5학년 2학기 기준의 에세이 샘플 20편 모음입니다. 실제 학생이 쓴 것이 아니라, 뉴욕 주 ELA 라이팅 루브릭을 기준으로 제가 직접 작성했습니다. 이 루브릭은 4~5학년 학생들의 글쓰기를 네 가지 영역으로 평가합니다: Content & Analysis (내용과 분석), Command of Evidence (근거 활용), Coherence & Organization (구성과 흐름), Control of Conventions (문법과 표기).
For each of the 10 prompts — covering Informational, Argumentative, and Narrative writing — you’ll find two samples side by side. Sample A is written at a below-to-on grade level (scores of 2–3). Sample B is written at the level of a student in an advanced, AAP, GT, or Honors class (scores of 3–4). Each sample includes rubric scores and a Strengths & Areas for Growth breakdown explaining exactly why one scores higher than the other.
10개의 프롬프트는 Informational, Argumentative, Narrative 세 가지 장르를 포함합니다. 각 프롬프트마다 두 가지 샘플이 있어요. Sample A는 기본~평균 수준 (2~3점), Sample B는 영재반·AAP·GT·Honors 수준 (3~4점)입니다. 각 샘플에는 루브릭 점수와 강점·개선점 코멘트가 함께 있어서, 왜 점수 차이가 나는지 정확히 확인하실 수 있어요.
This is not a resource for students to copy or memorize. It’s a reference for parents — so that the next time your child brings home an essay, you know what to actually look for.
학생이 외우거나 베끼라고 만든 게 아닙니다. 부모님이 기준을 갖기 위한 자료예요 — 다음에 아이가 에세이를 가져왔을 때, 무엇을 봐야 하는지 알 수 있도록요.
Who This Is For
This guide is especially helpful if your child is in 5th grade and you’re in a competitive school district — particularly in the mid-Atlantic or Northeast, where writing expectations tend to be high. It’s also useful if your child is an ESL learner, because the samples make it very visible where language gaps tend to affect scores most.
