Last-Minute Checklist for John Locke Essay Competition

이번 봄 내내 6학년 영재 학생 한 명과 John Locke Institute Essay Competition 2026을 준비했습니다. 오늘이 마지막 리뷰 날이에요. JLI는 단순히 영어를 잘 쓴 학생을 뽑지 않습니다. 심사위원들이 반복해서 말하는 한 가지 기준이 있어요 — “이 에세이가 누군가의 생각을 바꿀 수 있는가?”

I’ve spent this entire spring preparing one gifted 6th grader for the John Locke Institute Essay Competition 2026. Today is our final review. JLI doesn’t reward students who simply write good English. The judges return again and again to one criterion — “Could this essay actually change someone’s mind?”

요약하는 에세이는 통과하지 못합니다. 철학자들이 뭐라고 말했는지 정리한 글로는 안 돼요. 그 철학자들을 도구로 삼아 자신만의 주장을 세우는 학생만이 결승까지 갑니다.

A summarizing essay won’t make it. Walking through what philosophers said isn’t enough. Only students who use those thinkers as tools to build their own argument advance.

저는 JLI 심사위원들과 역대 수상자들의 공통된 피드백을 10가지 라스트미닛 체크리스트로 정리했습니다. 그중 다섯 가지만 미리 공유드리면요:

I’ve distilled the consistent feedback from JLI judges and past winners into a 10-point last-minute checklist. Five of them, previewed here:

• Does the thesis appear within the first 150 words — and is it genuinely arguable? Thesis가 첫 150 단어 안에 등장하는가 — 그리고 진짜 논쟁 가능한 주장인가
• Does every body paragraph logically build on the one before it? 모든 body 단락이 앞 단락 위에 논리적으로 쌓이는가 (목록이 아니라 논증인가)
• Is the student arguing, not summarizing? 학생이 요약이 아니라 논증을 하고 있는가
• Does the counterargument engage the strongest possible objection? Counterargument가 진짜 “가장 강한 반론”인가
• Does the conclusion open a new door instead of closing one? 결론이 닫지 않고 새 문을 여는가
